Title
An Arrival in Camp - Under the Proclamation of Emancipation
Date
1863-01-01
Description
Sketch by Alfred Waud based upon a photograph taken by David B. Woodbury on Jan. 1, 1863 - the day the Emancipation Proclamation took effect. This scene shows the condition of the formerly enslaved as they came in to Union lines.
In the spring of 1863, as Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's forces gathered on the west bank of the Mississippi River in northeast Louisiana, hundreds, then thousands of former slaves flooded in to Union lines, where many of them would soon become soldiers. Some would fight at Milliken's Bend.
Second image is a digitally enhanced version of Waud's sketch, which enables a finer view of some details of the original.
