A stereograph taken by photographer D.B. Woodbury showing an African American family pausing around a wagon, captioned as a scene taken on January 1, 1863, the first day that the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. Artist Alfred Waud would make a sketch from this photograph, which would be reproduced in Harper's Weekly on January 31, 1863.
