Official Records: War of the Rebellion

More formally known as: War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies but also often known simply as the "Official Records" or "O.R.", this massive multi-volume set was published by the War Department and the U.S. Government Printing Office between 1881 and 1901. It is based upon transcriptions of thousands of documents created during the American Civil War that were housed in the War Department, consisting of orders, reports, correspondence and similar material.
